Legal Aid - Current Cause List
These are the current court cases we are handling, flowing from the Inmate Interviews conducted at Correctional Centers in Lagos (Kirikiri Medium Custodial Center & Ikoyi Custodial Center).
Commissioner of Police v. Emeka Godspower
The Defendant was arraigned in February 2019 and was charged for Stealing a Vehicle. During the Interview, he said he was not guilty of the offence. According to him, he was approached by a friend to help sell the Vehicle and unknown to him the Vehicle was stolen by his friend.

Commissioner of Police v. Emmanuel Udom Effiong
The defendant was arrested in December 2019, after he was severely beaten by residents of a neighborhood who mistook him for a thief. According to him, he was coming back from a Christmas party around 11pm and decided to stay in the neighborhood because it was late, he slept off and was woken up with beatings.
He said he was not guilty of the offence.

Commissioner of Police v. Oluyemi Gbenga & 3 Ors
The Defendants were arrested during a Police raid in May 2019. According to them, there was a looting incident that occurred around their neighborhood. When the Police arrived, several persons were arrested, however, they could not pay for Police Bail and were subsequently charged to Court.
They pleaded not guilty of the offence.

Commissioner of Police v. Kingsley Anthony Ufot
The Defendant was arrested during the #EndSARS Protest in Lagos. According to him, he was observing the protest and incidental events, when he was arrested. He is yet to be arraigned and is currently at Kirikiri Medium Custodial Center.

Commissioner of Police v. Ayewo Sabo & Nasiru Idris
The defendants were arrested on the 3rd of May, 2020 and accused of stealing cartons of drinks. The defendants explained during our interview that they were set up by a friend, whom they had accompanied to deliver the drinks to the company's customers. They are currently awaiting trial at the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre.
The case is coming up for Trial on the next adjourned date.

Commissioner of Police v. Nasiru Mohammed
The Defendant was arrested in January 2020 and was accused of Burglary and Stealing. However, he stated that he was not guilty of the offence. He was also not able to perfect his bail and is currently at Kirkiri Medium Custodial Center.
