Nigerian unlawfully arrested by SARS Operatives Released from Prison after 29 months in Custody

Oluyemi Gbenga is a Nigerian artisan who was going about his daily activities in June 2019 when he was suddenly arrested by the defunct SARS Operatives. He spent two months in the Police Custody because he could not "pay" for his bail which was set at N500,000 (Five Hundred Thousand Naira) by the SARS Operatives.

He was charged to Court for "Disturbance of Public Peace" and offence he knew nothing about and was remanded at the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Center.

The ELA Initiative interviewed him during our visit to the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Center in February 2021 and decided to take up his case on a pro-bono basis. We secured his unconditional release when the Court granted our application and struct out the case against him.
