Idris Babatunde is a 17 year-old Nigerian who was remanded in the Ikoyi Custodial Centre in August 2019. His family could not afford the services of a Legal Practitioner neither could they fulfill his bail condition (bail bond was set at N25,000).
While working as an apprentice in a friend's shop in Oyingbo, he was arrested during a random Police raid around his vicinity. He was accused of stealing a mobile phone, an offence he knew nothing about. Within three days of his arrest, he was remanded in the Ikoyi Custodial Centre.
We met Idris during our visit to the Ikoyi Custodial Centre in January 2020, and subsequently decided to take up his case. We secured his unconditional release in March 2020 when the Court heard and granted our application to strike out the case.
